But now the psalmist receives a shock. When he comes out of his reverie he finds himself facing reality in the here and now. And that reality is what spoils everything in God’s Creation, the fact of sin. “O God, get rid of it,” he cries; in fact he says, “Get rid of those people who incarnate sin”, that is to say, “Get rid of all the sinners of the earth”. “I hate them for ‘throwing a spanner into the works’ of thy wonderful Creation.” He believes, then, that sinners are those people (1)
